  • MSIL stands for Microsoft Intermediate Language
  • MSIL is created by .NET compiler during compilation
  • MSIL is converted to machine code by JIT compiler to machine code
    • During run-time (JIT compilation)
    • Prior the application execution (preJIT compilation - NGen)

It can also be called

  • Intermediate Language (IL) or 
  • Common Intermediate Language (CIL)

Why MSIL?

MSIL is CPU-independent set of instructions that can be efficiently converted to the native code.
