When synchronized identity is used, user management occurs on-premises and Azure AD authenticates users by using on-premises passwords or hashes (user identities are synchronized to cloud).

When federated identity is used, user management occurs on-premises and Azure AD authenticates users by calling the on-premises domain controller (no user identities need to be synchronized to cloud).
